The Borovitskaya Tower

 GO BACK

This gate-tower was built in 1490 by Pietro Antonio Solari, on the site of the Kremlin's medieval western gate. The Borovitskaya gate used to serve as the Kremlin's service entrance, as the tower gave access to the royal grain sheds and stables. The name of the tower harks back to the distant time when the hill on which the fortress stands was covered with dense coniferous forest - bor in Russian.
